In this last installment in our series on the Five Growth Challenges, we look at the challenge of Acceptance, which emerges as we begin to interact with the greater world and experience the responsibilities of being a member of the community. Getting feedback from our actions and what we produce encourages us to begin gaging our skillsets, drawing conclusions, and judging ourselves. Am I a person who can produce? Can I Do My Thing?

When you get feedback, or when someone challenges you to grow in a particular way, what’s the impact on your system? If you’re like me at all, the initial impulse might be to resist. When I’m able to sit and study that resistance, and open my awareness to what’s underneath that feeling, what I find is a young part of me saying something like, “Don’t tell me what to do.” This set of responses is rooted in our fourth growth challenge: Freedom.

Can I Be an Authentic Individual?

The growth challenge around Authenticity arises when we learn to modify or mask a behavior or emotion to cater to what others want us to be. In order to be an empowered individual, people with this challenge have developed a projection outward of something that isn’t necessarily authentic to their inner world. A result can be a disconnect from what’s authentically true for themselves.
